The 28th season of The Children’s Ballet begins in a few weeks, promising students another year of growth and fun. As the season begins, you may see some familiar faces returning to The Children’s Ballet in new roles. Although former director Deni Jacks has retired from teaching, her educational legacy continues to guide the school. New directors Anne Johansson and Emily Miser – both alumni of The Children’s Ballet – are looking forward to introducing a new generation of students to the world of ballet and classical arts. Anne and Emily are also excited to welcome new teacher Mandy Milligan.
Anne Johansson, new Executive Director of The Children’s Ballet, grew up in Danville and was a student in the first class at The Children’s Ballet in 1987. Anne danced with the school through high school, appearing in the Indianapolis Ballet Theater’s 1989 Midwest tour of The Nutcracker. Anne founded an event planning firm in 2010, and has organized over 100 weddings, corporate and social events in central Indiana. She lives in Plainfield with her husband and two young daughters.
Returning students will recognize Emily Miser, The Children’s Ballet’s new Artistic Director. Emily was only six years old when she first walked into the pink building on Tennessee Street. She took class once a week, then twice a week and, as the years went on, became an assistant teacher with Miss Deni before eventually teaching her own class. While at Anderson University, she expanded her knowledge and love of dance, as well as her performance and choreographic repertoire.
The school’s newest teacher, Mandy Milligan is from Sidney, Ohio. She graduated high school from Interlochen Arts Academy in 2010 with a focus in dance and received her BFA in Ballet Performance from the University of Cincinnati’s College Conservatory of Music. Mandy has been apprentice with Mamluft&Co. Dance, guest artist and choreographer for the Performance Time Arts series at Cincinnati’s Contemporary Dance Theater and performing artist in Cincinnati’s Area Choreographers Festival and Dance Kaleidoscope Apprentice.
The Children’s Ballet is and always has been dedicated to high-quality dance instruction which imparts an appreciation for the art of dance, self-discipline, positive self-esteem and dedication. We look forward to seeing you at Registration this year!
