Welcome February!
Some exciting things are happening this month, and we are looking forward to dancing through winter. The studio will be open for classes on Monday, Feb 15!

Policy Reminders

Weather Closings: We are closed according to the Danville Community School closings. Check Facebook and Instagram for confirmation and Saturday closings.

Illness: To limit the spread of illness, please keep your dancer home if they stay home from school the same day. For more information on our health and safety guidelines + our wellness policies, please visit our website.

Attire: Students should arrive at the studio ready to dance, with hair neatly in place, wearing clean, neat, uniform ballet attire. Dressing properly for class is a lesson in itself as students learn both discipline and cooperation. Please also have students use the restroom before class as it can be disruptive to the flow of class. Thank you!

Teacher Spotlight: Sarah Weddle
Miss Sarah has been dancing since the age of three, beginning in The Master’s Study for 3 years, and finishing her high school career with The Children’s Ballet. During these years, she studied ballet, pointe, modern, and character dance under Donna Martelli, Deni Jacks, Heidi Eads-Jones, Robyn Wenrich, Melanie Schreiber, and Mandy Mulligan. After a year of assistant teaching under Emily Miser with The Children’s Balet, she has taken classes with the Online Professional Development Institute to earn her Certification in Dance Education and holds a membership with the National Dance Education Organization.

Here is a little Q&A so we can learn a little more about Miss Sarah!
Q: What is your dance background? I have been dancing for 14 years and assisting for one year. I started dancing with Miss Donna in The Master’s Study homeschool group for three years. Then, I danced at The Children’s Ballet for 11 years.
Q: What is your favorite thing about dancing? My favorite thing about dancing is the rush – that feeling you get when you finally conquer a difficult combination, or when you walk off stage after a performance you have been working on for months.
Q: What is your dream ballet role? My dream role would probably be the Sugar Plum Fairy from the Nutcracker. It has always been my favorite ballet.
Q: What is something that you think is important in becoming a better dancer? To become a better dancer, I believe confidence, determination, and dedication are keys components.

IN CLASS

Last month in Miss Emily’s classes, we did ballet exercises for listening, following, and coordination. We also focused on the movement concepts of space and size.

TERMS

Balletomane: A ballet fan or enthusiast. The word was invented in Russia in the early 19th century.

Glissade: Glide. A traveling step executed by gliding the working foot from the fifth position in the required direction, the other foot closing to it.

DID YOU KNOW?

The amount of energy need to perform a ballet is about the same running 18 miles!

DATES TO REMEMBER

Spring Break: March 21-28

Last week of classes and filming of virtual showcase: June 1-3

Live Showcase at Ellis Park: June 4 (rain date June 5)

Summer Session begins: June 14

Spring Showcase

Due to continued COVID restrictions, we are reimagining how we can showcase our dancers instead of an end-of-year performance. We are so proud of our dancers’ hard work, but also realize that our typical production is simply not feasible this spring. However, the show will go on with a special opportunity for every dancer!

One time per week classes: Classes that meet once each week will learn a dance throughout the spring semester. They will receive a costume, and during the last week of classes we will film the dance in the studio to perform a virtual showcase. Parents will be emailed a link to the password-protected page on our website to watch for free.

Two or three times per week classes: Classes that meet two times or more each week will learn a dance in each class they attend. They will receive one costume and perform a live showcase with limited attendance at Ellis Park Amphitheatre in Danville on Friday, June 4 at 7pm (rain date is June 5 at The Royal Theater in Danville). This will also be live-streamed online for those who are not able to attend in person. Families who have paid for more than one costume will be refunded automatically.

We appreciate your understanding and look forward to celebrating our students in June!
