Classes begin January 18!

We hope you’ve enjoyed your long break and are ready to jump back into ballet classes this week. Our instructors are looking forward to seeing everyone again!

Tuition for December and January were 50% but will go back to normal in February. Please be sure your account information is up to date.

Spring Showcase

Due to continued COVID restrictions, we are reimagining how we can showcase our dancers instead of an end-of-year performance. We are so proud of our dancers’ hard work, but also realize that our typical production is simply not feasible this spring. However, the show will go on with a special opportunity for every dancer!

One time per week classes: Classes that meet once each week will learn a dance throughout the spring semester. They will receive a costume, and during the last week of classes we will film the dance in the studio to perform a virtual showcase. Parents will be emailed a link to the password-protected page on our website to watch for free.

Two or three times per week classes: Classes that meet two times or more each week will learn a dance in each class they attend. They will receive one costume and perform a live showcase with limited attendance at Ellis Park Amphitheatre in Danville on Friday, June 4 at 7pm (rain date is June 5 at The Royal Theater in Danville). This will also be live-streamed online for those who are not able to attend in person. Families who have paid for more than one costume will be refunded automatically.

While we are excited to offer this opportunity for our students to perform, we realize it will be different from past years. We have had to structure it this way for these reasons:

  • Due to current and projected size limitations on social gatherings, a typical performance at the high school with all our students and their family members is impossible.
  • Our typical story-based performance is not possible this year because we can’t use backdrops, scenery or props at the Ellis Park amphitheatre.
  • Staging a showcase at the park with all our students would actually run much longer than our typical performance, and it would be difficult to separately manage and socially-distance our large number of classes.

We encourage families of once-a-week students to make a special family time of watching their in-studio performance. And share with friends and family wouldn’t normally be able to attend a performance.

We appreciate your understanding and look forward to celebrating our students in June!

Teacher Spotlight: Miss Hadassah
Miss Hadassah, originally from Michigan City, Indiana has been dancing for 18+ years and is trained in Vaganova ballet, pointe, lyrical, modern, character, and jazz. Her extensive training includes studios such as Southold Dance Theatre (South Bend, Indiana), Works in Motion Dance Company (La Porte, Indiana), Ballet Chicago, Ruth Paige Foundation, Boitsov Classical Ballet (Chicago, Illinois) and summer intensives at the Grand Rapids Ballet and Ballet Magnificat.

Hadassah began her teaching career at the age of 16, receiving her teaching certification with Dance & Gym USA. As part of her professional career she has taken various classes led by dancers such as Travis and Denise Wall, Ray Leeper, Mark Meismer, and Kim McSwain among others.

Hadassah has also participated in master classes led by cast members of the Broadway Touring Productions including Beauty and the Beast, Wicked, and Chicago and was chosen Broadway Bound student by cast members of Beauty and the Beast and Wicked.

We are so grateful to have Miss Hadassah at The Children’s Ballet where she serves as teacher of our Intermediate and Advanced classes and Director of Pointe.

IN CLASS

In Miss Emily’s classes last month, we really dove into The Nutcracker. We danced the divertissements with fans, umbrellas, veils, and flowers; however, our favorite was dancing Mother Ginger with the parachute! We ended our semester by watching excerpts from The New York City Ballet’s version of The Nutcracker, and of course, celebrated TCB’s limited performance of The Nutcracker on stage.

TERMS

waltz (German: Walzer; French: Valse, Italian: Valzer, Spanish: Vals, Polish: Walc), probably deriving from German Ländler, is dance music in triple meter often written in time signature 3/4.

Pantomime is dramatic entertainment, originating in Roman mime, in which performers express meaning through gestures accompanied by music.

WINTER REMINDERS

In order to keep students (and teachers) healthy throughout the winter months, please keep students at home from dance if they are feeling ill. The Children’s Ballet follows the Danville School System for closings due to weather. We will also keep you informed via Facebook for closings.
